| | Moriah, New York, is located on the historic eastern edge of New York State's Adirondacks. Lake Champlain was a battleground for hundreds years following its discovery by Samuel de Champlain in 1609. Native American tribes, French, English, and, finally, American colonists, fought to control this area.
Iron deposits were first noted in early French and British documents in the 1740s, in the Moriah area. Benedict Arnold of Revolutionary War fame, used ore from deposits along the shores of Lake Champlain to outfit the first American Navy vessels, which were constructed on Lake Champlain for use in fighting the British.
The property known as Fisher Hill, boarded on the east by Lake Champlain, and on the west by the high peaks of the Adirondacks, is where Moriah is situated. The first permanent settlement in the area was established in 1785.
